A high quality study compared the short and long term outcomes of surgical and conservative management of rotator cuff tears to attempt a treatment recommendation to patients.

Results showed no difference in function scores between surgical or conservative groups at 1 or 2 years after intervention. The surgical group had statistically lower pain scores at 1 year after intervention but unlikely to be clinically significant.
